Born to American and French parents, Valerie Leonard has always been surrounded by a world of images. Her mother was a painter, and her father, Herman Leonard, was a photographer. When she presses the shutter, she remembers her father’s words: “Always tell the truth, but in terms of beauty.” Valerie looks to show the dignity of women and men, particularly in hostile environments.

Valerie Leonard is the second place winner of The Other Hundred Educators Edition.

Sofie Knijff

Sofie Knijff is a Dutch-Belgian photographer based in Amsterdam. Initially a student of theatre performance, her background in theatre continues to be reflected in her photographic work. Her recent artistic projects have received grants from the Mondrian Foundation and been shortlisted for the Unseen Photo Fair Dummy Award (2012), Mack Book Award (2013) and Best Photobook Award Kassel (2015).

Sélim Harbi

Sélim Harbi is a Tunis-born documentary photographer and multimedia storyteller whose work focuses on using visual experimentation to explore new storytelling techniques, subnarratives and contemporary issues. He is based between Tunis and West Africa. In 2013, he founded Afreekyama, the first pan-African collective dedicated to multimedia storytelling.

Petar Kürschner

Petar Kürschner is an award-winning photographer and film production manager. His work has appeared in GEO, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, Der Stern, Traveller, Gloss and many other publications. In the last couple of years, he has also worked as production manager, researcher and photographer for German-French documentary film organisation ARTE.

Pablo Izquierdo

Pablo Izquierdo is a graduate of the Universidad del Pacífico, where he majored in creativity and art direction. He has worked for advertising agencies, foundations and companies in Chile and Argentina. In Chile, he co-founded the Gancho Studio. Working mostly in documentary photography, poverty, people with mental disabilities and the elderly are the central themes of his current work.

Nataliya Kharlamova

Nataliya Kharlamova was born in 1978 in Moscow. She started photography in 1998. In 2002, she graduated from the faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University. Currently, she is working on several documentary photography projects, including “Autism: Adult Children”, about the prospects of children with special needs, and a photo/video exploration of Tuva in Siberia.

Matjaz Krivic is a documentary photographer specialising in capturing the personality and grandeur of indigenous people and places. His intense, personal and aesthetically moving style has won him several prestigious awards, including World Press Photo. Most of the time he can be found travelling with his camera between the Sahara and the Himalayas.

Mark Edward Harris’s assignments have taken him to 92 countries on six continents. His award-winning editorial work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Life, Time and GEO, amongst other publications. His books include The Way of the Japanese Bath, North Korea, South Korea, and Inside Iran. North Korea was named Photography Book of the Year at the International Photography Awards.

Born in Parma in 1976, Marco Gualazzini began his career as a photographer in 2004 with his hometown’s local daily, La Gazzetta di Parma. He has covered Africa since 2011. His work has appeared in titles including Time, Internazionale, Io Donna, D di Repubblica, L’Espresso, Der Spiegel, The Sunday Times Magazine, Wired and Paris Match.

Liu Junyang was born into a Tujia ethnic minority community in Qianjiang, Chongqing, China. He is a member of the China Photographers Association and Images Copyright Society of China. His works have been awarded or featured in provincial, national and international competitions and have been exhibited in numerous international photography exhibitions.

Khaula Jamil is an independent freelance documentary photographer, photojournalist and an entrepreneur. Born and raised in Karachi, she has an MFA in photography from Parsons School of Design. Her most far-reaching and popular project is the Facebook-based “Humans of Karachi”, which she started in 2012, inspired by Brandon Stanton’s “Humans of New York”.

Jacob Balzani Lööv is an Italian photographer based in Milan and Zurich primarily interested in working on underreported social and environmental issues. Before becoming a full-time photographer, he worked for several years as an environmental researcher. He has worked around the world, but one place he keeps returning to is the Caucasus.
