Yalmay is a Yolngu Rirratjingu woman from Yirrkala, a community in Australia’s Northern Territory. A gifted linguist, she has a bachelor of education degree in teaching and learning from Charles Darwin University and a diploma in teaching from the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education.
In 2005 she was named a Teacher of Excellence (Remote Community) by Australia’s Department of Education, and in 2007 she was appointed Principal of Yirrkala School.
In 2013 she was selected as one of four finalists for the 2013 Human Rights medal by the Australian Human Rights Commission.
Yalmay is also an artist whose work has been exhibited both in Australia and at the University of Virginia’s Bayly Art Museum in the United States.
