A THE Malaysian Insight photojournalist’s work recently won an international photojournalism project.

Irwan Majid, the news portal’s Sabah-based photojournalist, was announced as the winner of the non-profit photojournalism project called The Other Hundred Healers, an initiative by Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT).

“This project received nearly 600 submissions from 120 nations and only one winner in each country is selected.

“And we are very happy that Malaysian photographer Irwan Majid’s work is chosen to represent Malaysia in this project,” Jaqueline P’ng, GIFT project manager said in a statement.

Titled Celebrating Unsung Heroes of the Pandemic, this edition celebrates the men, women and children who have been healing their communities during this global pandemic through selfless acts of work, caring, kindness and compassion.

“Our objective was to celebrate the healer: anyone doing work to support and sustain their community. Thus, we took a broad view of what it meant to be a healer: not just medical workers, but also delivery people, radio operators, and artists, etc.

Irwan said his hard work has finally paid off.

With this win, he hopes that people would get to know more about Sabah

“As a Sabahan, I’m very happy and proud of the win because it’s not easy to win an international competition.

“I’m glad that I’ve played some part now to bring Sabah to the world stage.

“Hopefully, people out there would come to know more about Sabah, its beautiful diversity, rich forest resources and the beautiful beaches,” he said, adding that he would continue to compete in other International competitions.

Irwan thanked his employers, family and friends for their support. – November 11, 2020.
